WMD’s Mar 19

Walcome and hello!  Hoo’s it gaun, ya bints and ya bampots?  It’s time for the next Mind blowing installment of THE WEEKLY MIND DUMP!!!!  The week of Mar 19, 2018!

Our Games

Before we go on about upcoming games, this weekend, March 17, the TKS was host to our games, the Southeast Alabama Highland Games.  Also known as the Alabama State Championships!  A great time was had by all.  We had 42 competitors from all over.  Birmingham (Alabama, not UK), Mississippi, home town throwers from Dothan.  It was a great time.  The clans were a blast to see and talk to.  Keep an eye out for year 4 in 2019!  I strongly invite you to go check out the FB page and look at the pics.

Upcoming Games

Since many of us are games aficionados (yeah, really trying to put that dictionary to good use that I got for Christmas), I am going to try and list upcoming Highland Games.  So if you know of a game, share the date with us and we will post it here.

03/23-25/18, Saltwater Highland Games – Myrtle Beach, SC
04/20-22/18, Loch Norman Highland Games – Huntersville, NC
05/18-20/18, Smokey Mountain Scottish Festival – Maryville, TN
05/19-20/18, Rio Grande Valley Celtic Festival – Albuquerque, NM
05/19/18, Fairhill Scottish Games – Newark, DE

For a list, check out the Association of Scottish Gamasgf.org

es & Festivals at their website.

Want to throw?

Many of us #kilties start out wondering just how does one enter in the realm of Highland games?  Well there are many ways, but the best is to find a group of guys and start training with them.  And as such, may I suggest checking out Facebook.  This group, the Celtic Strong Throwing Team, happens to be a group of friends that train in south Florida.  Go check out their Facebook group and search for other groups near you.

What are the events?

Ah, the actual athletics.  Well, there are 6 basic events.  A detailed listing can be found at the Southeast Alabama Highland Games webpage.  Go there and check out the athletics section.  But the short answer is:  caber toss, sheaf toss, Weight for distance, Weight for height, hammer throw, and stone throw.  You have to compete in all 6 to have a chance of taking Games Champion.

Kilts in the News

This is more along the lines for the ladies.  We try to keep up and see what kilt news is out there, what is going on, and fun interesting stories for all us kilties.

I came across an article at the Sunday PostThe article is letting women know why they need a tartan skirt.  Us guys have known that for hundreds of years.  Just look at all the tartans we wear.  But it is an interesting read.  Bringing more into the public fray.  Guys, this is a prime way to get your lassies to grab the tartan skirt and go to town!

More news along this line, we are about a month or 2 from opening up the TKS annual kilt order.  So guys, here is another chance for you to really get your lassie call classed up in the TKS tartan!  My wife has a TKS skirt as well as other lovely lassies.  Trust me, you’ll love them in this.

Dae ye talk Scots?

Time for this week’s installment of Scottish Slang!  This week, “blether” .   Translated to “chat away”, or as my son tells me all the time, chitty chitty chat chat.
