WMD’s May 7
Tis’ the week of May 7. The first Monday of the 5th month of the 2018th year of our Lord. Wow, does anyone really use the “Year of our Lord” much anymore? You see it on EXTREMELY formal invitations, but beyond that, not so much. Why not? I think we need to start bringing that back. Just to drive people nuts.
Questions or comments
I started asking last week about letters, and as usual, I’m gonna keep on it. If you happen to have a question about the TKS, kilting, rules and etiquette, drop us a line. We’ll be happy to answer it here. We can start having a “Kilt Talk” section…or a mailbag section. Yeah I’m remembering back to the days of CarTalk. They had some GREAT questions and letters. Anyone remember the “Andy Scale”? We need that.
Since many of us are games aficionados (yeah, really trying to put that dictionary to good use that I got for Christmas), I am going to try and list upcoming Highland Games. So if you know of a game, share the date with us and we will post it here.

Want to throw?
Many of us #kilties start out wondering just how does one enter in the realm of Highland games? Well there are many ways, but the best is to find a group of guys and start training with them. And as such, may I suggest checking out Facebook. This group, the Celtic Strong Throwing Team, happens to be a group of friends that train in south Florida. Go check out their Facebook group and search for other groups near you.
What are the events?
Ah, the actual athletics. Well, there are 6 basic events. A detailed listing can be found at the Southeast Alabama Highland Games webpage. Go there and check out the athletics section. But the short answer is: caber toss, sheaf toss, Weight for distance, Weight for height, hammer throw, and stone throw. You have to compete in all 6 to have a chance of taking Games Champion.
Kilts in the News
To share some of the highland games news, May 5th was the Savannah GA 42dn annual games! According to the news article, turnout was good. But why should I rehash what someone else has written? Check out the article here.
Ok, so I will rehash a little. From the looks of things, the competition was fierce, the pipers filled the air with the sounds of a dying cat being squeezed to death…..oh wait, those are bagpipes, and the lassies danced the day away. While we may have missed this year’s games, keep an eye on the list and try to start making it to next years.
Dae ye talk Scots?
Time for this week’s installment of Scottish Slang! This week, “cludgie“. This one is just fun. Cludgie refers to a toilet, bathroom, pisser, or if you want to have some really horrific images in your head, a port-a-john. But I think this is a much nicer way to announce at some outdoor festival that you need to relieve yourself. Think about it. You’re out at (fill in the blank) music festival with your kiltie friends (all who read this blog) and you see some fine lassies you want to talk to. After about 10 minutes into your conversation with them, all that beer you have been drinking catches up with you. Just tell your buddies you’re headed to the cludgie, be right back, and all will be well.
Here is the TKS helping you speak in a coded message ;).
